As for why it's important to retain certain dates for celebration or commemoration.
If communal events, like gatherings with cooking and eating, are organised just periodically without any special significance, then there isn't a reason to go. People all have their different lifestyles, hobbies, interests. Over time they will find it boring and then stop going.
But special days, with their meanings and specific routines to perform, define the identity.
Such special days need not be old, traditional or religious. Here's an example, Norwegian Constitution Day.

The cause is political (signing of the constitution). The history is short (started two hundred years ago in 19th century).
But what they do is all traditional. Wearing folk clothes, parading, eating, partying, dancing...
Imagine Hkers celebrating founding of HK on 26 Jan, fused with Lunar New Year celebrations. And then once more in the summer on 26 June (on which Treaty of Nanking became effective). Wouldnt that be a lovely scene? XD
